How to Build Rapport and Connect with Your Prospects by Mirroring Them

One of the best ways to build rapport and connect with your prospects is by mirroring them. And you can do this no matter what kind of business you are in, whether network marketing, direct sales, general sales or use with pretty much anybody you want to do business with.

Remember that people like to do business with those they know, like and trust, and your job is to build rapport with them and form a connection with them so they will want to do business with you.  The better the connection, the more likely they will want to do business.

There are obvious ways to build rapport, like asking really good questions as you interview your  prospects and qualify them, whether they are friends of yours, referrals, or if you are recruiting professionals or calling leads.

However, there is also a very subtle approach you can use to build rapport, and your prospects may not even be aware of it, and that is by mirroring them.  It’s as if you are holding up a mirror to them but you are doing back to them what they are doing to you.

So, if you are with your prospect in person you can  mimic their hand and body gestures.  If they talk with their hands, you  talk with your hands.  If they lean forward, you lean forward.  If they cross their arms or legs, you do the same.  Now, there is a limit to this as well.  If you copy every single thing they are doing, they will wonder what the heck is going on.

Be subtle about it.  And you don’t have to do the movement right away, or even use the same arm or leg they are using, so it doesn’t have to be an exact mirror.

mirror mirroring with prospectAnd if you are talking on the phone, then you can connect with your prospect by mirroring the speed or tempo of their voice, or how loudly or softly they speak.  If they talk in animation and high energy, then you can speak with more energy.  If they speak more slowly and deliberately and in a softer voice, then you do the same thing.

If someone has really low energy, well, first of all, if they have really low energy you might not want them in your business.  But if someone has low energy and you do want to speak with them, then slow down your pace of talking and lower your energy level as well.  Be a chameleon.  Blend in. Do what they do.   You can also use mirroring very effectively when talking to friends and family, to your children or anyone else you interact with.  It will help put them at ease in conversation.
