2 Little Things Have a Compound Effect in Your Business: Lessons From Jeff Olson and Darren Hardy

There are 2 little things that you can do each day, that on any given day, don’t seem like a big deal, but over time can lead to massive success and satisfaction in your business life.

Little things DO matter.

Darren Hardy, author of The Compound Effect, and Jeff Olson, author of the Slight Edge, both say similar things in their books.  Little changes done on a daily basis that seem imperceptible at the time, can lead to amazing results over time.

With the compound effect you are building on something every day.  Imagine your success one year from now if you try to do one new thing on a daily basis that gets you closer to your goals.

Here are a few ideas to get you going:

Some of them may take you out of your comfort zone, but you will find that most growth you have will take place outside of your comfort zone:

1.  Call 1-2 more prospects each day than the day before
2.  Call someone on your “chicken list”
3.  Cold call on professionals for your business
4.  Listen to personal growth and development CDs in the car
5.  Add more people to your Facebook friends list (when you add friends, be sure to put in a personal message saying why you’d want to connect with that person)
6.  Arrange to do a presentation to a group of people
7.  Learn new ways to market your business (article marketing, FB, Twitter, YouTube, blogging, pay-per-click advertising)
8.  Read 10 pages per day from books about improving your life.
9.  In your family life- if you have children, make a concerted effort to spend at least 15 min uninterrupted time one on one with each child in your family each day
10. Think of something you want to master, then go after it one step at a time.

Let’s take the reading example:  on any given day, if you read those 10 pages will they change your life? No.  If you choose not to read those pages, will that change your life? No.  But over time, the accumulation of all that reading or non-reading will have a giant impact.

Don’t worry about messing up or failing as you learn to master something new.  Think of babies learning how to walk.  Did they go from crawling to running? No, of course not. They took little steps and fell.  They fail more than they succeed, but they keep at it until they learn how to walk steadily.  They don’t give up. They build on small successes.  They spent more time falling than walking, but they were determined to reach their goal. They were on the success curve.

You can do the same thing in your business.  First you crawl, then you toddle around, then you walk and THEN you run.

You won’t start out with a huge organization right away.  It takes work in the beginning, and you will fall down a lot until you get comfortable with what you are doing. And you won’t get comfortable without practice.

I messed up a lot in the beginning, but I kept at it and now am quite comfortable, my posture and confidence are much improved.  But it took a lot of practice.  Just this past week I gave a presentation to a whole group of sales professionals, and it felt really good.

My point is, is that a few months ago there was no way I was prepared to speak to that group.  But talking to more and more professionals one by one and on a daily basis, I gradually built my confidence up to the point where I could speak to a whole group of people and you can do the same thing!

You can either stretch for what you could be or settle for what you are now. It’s your decision.

Imagine your success one year from now if you stretch yourself and do at least one thing each day that takes you a little bit out of your comfort zone.

You will be glad you did.
